Gookum Perley Bear

Gookum Perley Bear, circa 1920s, the beginning of The Tobique Women of Strength, Determination, and artists, senators, law-makers, home-makers and champions of women’s rights in the late 1970s, early 1980s.
“Gookum” (elderly auntie/grandmother) took in many of her relative’s female children and helped raise them into the same women she was herself – tough, earth-loving, and standing up for social justice. Many of the original “Tobique Women” who made the walk to Ottawa were her descendants.
